Gothic Originally described the Pagan Germanic Tribes during the Middle ages. They wore dark armor and had a darker style of architecture using stone and tall spires atop the buildings.

The term was later used to describe the architecture used by the catholic churches during the age of faith. They got this style of architecture from the aforementioned Germanic Tribes.

When used to describe Literature, they refer to the dark nature of the story. The Germanic Tribes had fairy tales designed for children with dark subject matters. Writers like Edgar Allen Poe and Edward Gorey are considered Gothic Writers. Examples would be Poe's " A Cask of Amontillado" and " The Tell- Tale Heart"

Now and days, people who dress gothic just call it goth. There really is no reason for it. They mean to say that they are dark in the way they dress, but used the wrong word for it. The Word Gothic really means " referring to the Pagan Germanic Tribes of the Middle Ages". They often wear crosses and are pictured in cathedrals, but that is as far as it goes.
